Bring automatic sign language translation to the masses.

I've spent six years recording American Sign Language in a motion-capture suit and giving the results away for free. Before that: mortgages, a provincial vaccine booking line, and order entry for a logistics company.

Galtis signing HELLO. SG_ASL_Hello_Var, recorded 2024-06-09.

The Sign Language Mocap Archive

A public, CC0 library of sign language motion capture, recorded since 2020 under the Studio Galt name. No rights reserved. Retarget it to your own characters, ship it in a game, train a model on it, or fix my mistakes and send them back.

How it's made

Every sign is performed in an Xsens Link suit with StretchSense gloves, cleaned in Blender, and published with a rendered reference video, a shapekey record for facial movement, and JSON pose files for every key frame. When a sign turns out wrong, the corrected take is added under a new date and the old one stays, so any result can be reproduced.

Rig flow

  • FK / IK controls
  • Intermediate rig
  • Correction bones
  • Deform rig

The avatar, Galtis, is open source too.

What's in the box

  • SG ASL Dictionary and SG ASL Fingerspelling collections
  • FBX exports mapped to Mixamo, the Unreal Engine mannequin, and Rigify
  • Game-ready mesh files plus lighter no-mesh research sets
  • Blender pose libraries and per-pose JSON compatible with Jason Pose Manager
  • Load-tested in Maya, Nvidia Omniverse, Unity, and Unreal; glTF and USD next

Tooling around the archive: Python automation for FBX import/export, batch mesh stripping, sentence assembly from single-sign clips, and a Blender-to-AI-video pipeline for ASL content.
